Clive Branson’s Fishing Tackle Recommendations – Rod and Reel Combos
Over more than 60 years of fishing, I’ve used countless rods and reels, from basic equipment to the finest tackle available for international match fishing.
One thing I’ve learned is that expensive tackle doesn’t automatically make someone a better angler. What matters most is choosing equipment that is comfortable, balanced and suitable for the fishing you intend to do.
Choosing your first fishing rod
For beginners, I generally recommend a rod that is light enough to handle comfortably and forgiving enough to cope with the occasional mistake.
A rod around 10–12 feet can be a useful starting point for many general coarse fishing situations, although the ideal length depends on the venue and method.
Matching the reel to the rod
A good reel should operate smoothly, have a reliable clutch and balance comfortably with the rod. There’s little point buying an expensive reel if it makes the outfit awkward to use.
Are rod and reel combinations good value?
They certainly can be. A ready-made combination takes much of the guesswork out of choosing compatible equipment, particularly for beginners.
The Shakespeare Firebird Match Combo is one example of an entry-level outfit worth considering. However, I always recommend checking the specifications to ensure it suits your intended fishing.
My advice
Start with sensible, affordable equipment, learn the basic skills and upgrade only when you understand what additional features you actually need.
Remember, it’s the angler who catches the fish, not the price of the tackle!
