Clive Branson’s Fishing Tackle Recommendations – Fishing Line

Throughout more than 60 years of fishing, including competing at World Championship level, I’ve learned that choosing the correct fishing line is just as important as choosing the right rod, reel or float.

Line diameter matters

One of the biggest mistakes anglers make is choosing fishing line based entirely on its breaking strain. Two lines with the same stated breaking strain can have different diameters, and that difference can affect presentation.

For delicate float fishing, particularly when targeting roach and other shy-biting fish, a finer line can make a considerable difference.

Suppleness and presentation

I prefer a line that behaves naturally and allows the bait to be presented effectively. A stiff line can sometimes interfere with presentation, particularly when fishing lighter floats and smaller baits.

Choosing the right breaking strain

There is no single fishing line suitable for every situation.

For light float fishing, I generally favour finer diameters, while stronger lines are necessary when targeting larger fish or fishing close to obstacles.

The important thing is to match your line to the conditions, the method and the fish you expect to catch.

Preston Innovations Reflo Float Max

This line is designed specifically for float fishing and offers a combination of relatively low diameter, knot strength and abrasion resistance.

It’s one of the options worth considering for anglers looking for a dedicated float-fishing reel line.

My advice

Never choose fishing line simply because it claims an impressive breaking strain. Consider its diameter, suppleness, knot strength and suitability for your particular style of fishing.

Remember, good presentation often catches more fish than expensive tackle!
