Clive Branson’s Fishing Tackle Recommendations – Fishing Backpacks & Rod Holders
Throughout my international match fishing career, I’ve carried an enormous amount of fishing tackle to rivers, canals and lakes, both at home and abroad.
One thing I’ve learned is that having the right equipment is important, but being able to transport it comfortably and efficiently is equally valuable.
A well-designed fishing backpack can make a tremendous difference, particularly when you have a long walk to your fishing peg.
Keeping your tackle organised
There’s nothing more frustrating than arriving at your fishing spot and spending valuable time searching through bags for hooks, floats, line or other small accessories.
I recommend choosing a backpack with several compartments so that different items of tackle can be stored separately.
Having everything organised means you can spend less time searching for equipment and more time concentrating on your fishing.
Built-in rod holders
One particularly useful feature of some modern fishing backpacks is an integrated rod holder.
This allows you to carry a rod or compact rod case alongside your other equipment, leaving your hands free.
However, always make sure the holder secures your rod properly and provides sufficient protection during transport.
Comfort makes a difference
If you’ve ever walked a considerable distance along a riverbank carrying heavy fishing tackle, you’ll appreciate the importance of a comfortable backpack.
Look for adjustable padded shoulder straps, a supportive back panel and strong carrying handles.
Weight distribution is particularly important. A poorly balanced backpack can become uncomfortable surprisingly quickly.
Choosing the right size
For a short pleasure fishing session, a compact backpack may be all you need.
However, anglers carrying additional clothing, bait containers, tackle boxes and other accessories may prefer something larger.
My advice is to choose a backpack that provides enough space for your normal fishing requirements without encouraging you to carry unnecessary equipment.
Durability and weather protection
Fishing equipment is regularly exposed to rain, mud and damp conditions.
I recommend looking for strong stitching, reliable zips and water-resistant materials.
Remember that water-resistant doesn’t necessarily mean waterproof, so valuable items such as phones and cameras should be kept in suitable waterproof protection.
My advice
Over the years, I’ve learned that successful fishing isn’t always about having the most expensive equipment.
Sometimes it’s the simplest accessories that make the biggest difference to your enjoyment.
Choose a fishing backpack that is comfortable, practical, well-organised and suitable for the type of fishing you enjoy.
After all, the less time you spend struggling with your equipment, the more time you can spend fishing!
