Clive Branson’s Fishing Tackle Recommendations – Rod Holdalls
Throughout my international match fishing career, I’ve travelled thousands of miles carrying fishing rods, reels and other equipment to rivers, canals and lakes.
One thing I’ve learned is that expensive fishing tackle deserves proper protection. There’s little point investing in a good rod and reel only to risk damaging them while travelling.
Protecting your fishing rods
A good rod holdall should provide adequate padding to protect your rods from knocks and accidental damage.
I particularly favour designs that allow rods to be transported with their reels attached. This saves valuable time when setting up, especially during competitions.
Choosing the right size
Before purchasing a rod holdall, consider how many rods you normally carry and whether you need room for additional equipment.
For general pleasure fishing, a compact holdall may be perfectly adequate. However, match anglers often require larger models with several compartments.
Always check the internal length to ensure your rods will fit comfortably.
Comfort and practicality
A strong carrying handle and a comfortable shoulder strap can make a tremendous difference, particularly when walking long distances to your peg.
Good-quality zips, reinforced stitching and water-resistant materials are also worth considering.
My advice
Don’t simply buy the largest or most expensive rod holdall available.
Choose one that suits your fishing, protects your equipment and is comfortable to carry.
Remember, looking after your tackle properly can save you money in the long run.
